Abstract

In this article we will present a conceptual framework which describes a sequence of modelling skills; skills which can be involved in students' mathematical modelling activities. On the basis of a course in mathematical modelling for freshmen, nine modelling skills are exemplified and described. The conceptual framework includes, for example, skill in mathematisations, skill in strategy and skill in reflection. We will discuss how useful these concepts are and the relation between them. The purpose is to reach a better understanding of what kind of skills students can develop through modelling activities in mathematics instruction. This article is based on a master thesis titled: Modelling skills – development and testing of a conceptual framework (Hansen et.al., 1996).
