The article describes a study in which year eleven students, working in pairs, explore factorisation of second degree polynomials using graphical representations of functions. The students are guided into a new way of working, where they get to work with a series of questions using a graphing calculator. The results show that the students pose their own hypotheses and use the graphing calculator on their own initiative in certain situations.
